Important Safety Information
Saxenda (Liraglutide)
Prescription MedicationSaxenda (liraglutide 3.0 mg) is an FDA-approved once-daily injectable GLP-1 receptor agonist indicated for chronic weight management in adults. It is distinct from liraglutide products used for diabetes (Victoza). A prescription and ongoing clinical monitoring are required.
Emergency: If you experience chest pain, severe shortness of breath, a prolonged painful erection (over 4 hours), or sudden vision/hearing loss — call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room immediately.
Who Should Not Use Saxenda (Liraglutide)
- Personal or family history of MTC or MEN 2
- Known hypersensitivity to liraglutide
- Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals
- Patients with prior hypersensitivity to liraglutide-containing products
Warnings & Precautions
Thyroid C-Cell Risk
Saxenda has a black box warning for thyroid C-cell tumors based on animal data. Contraindicated in patients with personal or family history of MTC or MEN 2.
Acute Pancreatitis
Acute pancreatitis has been reported. Monitor for persistent severe abdominal pain and discontinue if pancreatitis is suspected.
Suicidal Ideation
Cases of suicidal ideation and behavior have been reported in clinical trials. Monitor closely; discontinue if symptoms occur.
Tachycardia
Heart rate increases of 2–3 beats per minute on average have been reported. Use with caution in patients with pre-existing cardiac conditions.
Multi-dose Titration Required
Saxenda must be titrated over 5 weeks starting at 0.6 mg/day. Rapid escalation increases risk of GI adverse events.

- Nausea (most common, especially during titration)
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Abdominal pain
- Decreased appetite
- Headache
- Increased heart rate
- Injection site reactions
Drug Interactions
Always inform your provider of all medications, supplements, and substances you are currently taking.
- Insulin and sulfonylureas — increased hypoglycemia risk
- Oral medications requiring consistent gastric emptying for absorption
- Other GLP-1 agonists — do not combine
When to Contact Your Provider
- Any thoughts of self-harm or depression
- Suspected pancreatitis
- Rapid or persistently elevated heart rate
- Signs of thyroid tumor
- Severe or prolonged nausea and vomiting causing dehydration
