Important Safety Information
Valacyclovir (brand name Valtrex) is an FDA-approved prescription antiviral medication used to treat and suppress outbreaks of herpes simplex virus (HSV-1 and HSV-2), genital herpes, and cold sores. It works by reducing the ability of the virus to multiply.
Emergency: If you experience chest pain, severe shortness of breath, a prolonged painful erection (over 4 hours), or sudden vision/hearing loss — call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room immediately.
Kidney Function
Valacyclovir is cleared through the kidneys. Dose adjustments are required in individuals with reduced kidney function. Inform your provider of any kidney conditions.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Valacyclovir may be used during pregnancy under provider guidance as the risk of untreated herpes outbreaks may outweigh medication risks. Discuss with your provider.
Not a Cure
Valacyclovir does not cure herpes infections. It reduces outbreak frequency, duration, and severity, and lowers (but does not eliminate) transmission risk.
